Who we are

Athertons is an independent estate and letting agency with offices at 14 Dorchester Road, Oakdale, Poole, BH15 3JY and 508 Wimborne Road, Winton, Bournemouth, BH9 2EX. For the purposes of UK data protection law, Athertons is the controller of the personal information described in this policy. What information we collect

• Contact details such as your name, address, email address and phone number, when you ask for a valuation, register for property alerts, book a viewing, make an offer or contact us.
• Property and transaction details about homes you’re selling, buying, letting or renting.
• Identity and financial checks. As estate agents we’re legally required to verify the identity of our clients and buyers under anti-money laundering regulations, and we may ask for proof of funds or a mortgage agreement in principle. For lettings, we carry out referencing and Right to Rent checks.
• Website usage information, such as the pages you visit, collected through cookies and Google Analytics.

How we use your information

• To provide the services you’ve asked for, such as valuations, marketing your property, arranging viewings, handling offers and managing tenancies.
• To meet our legal obligations, including anti-money laundering checks, Right to Rent checks and tenancy deposit protection.
• To keep you updated about properties and services you’ve asked to hear about. You can unsubscribe at any time.
• To improve our website and services.

We rely on one or more of these legal bases: performing a contract with you, complying with the law, our legitimate interests in running our business, and your consent (for example, for marketing emails).

Who we share it with

We only share your information when we need to, for example with buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants involved in your transaction; solicitors and conveyancers; mortgage advisers (only with your agreement); identity verification, compliance and referencing providers; tenancy deposit schemes; contractors carrying out work on managed properties; property portals such as Rightmove and Zoopla; and the IT and software providers that run our systems. We never sell your personal information.

How long we keep it

We keep your information only for as long as we need it. Records of property transactions and identity checks are kept for at least five years after the transaction ends, as anti-money laundering rules require. Marketing preferences are kept until you unsubscribe.

Keeping your information safe

We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including secure, encrypted connections on our website and password-protected systems. Only staff who need your information to do their job can access it.

Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. To make a request, contact either office. We’ll respond within one month.
